Want credit for your internship?

Girl in chemistry labHere at the University of Alabama we offer great internship recourses for students to explore! At some point in your college career you will do an internship and wonder what the next step is. One of the options you should consider is GS 491. This is a course you can take that will allow you to receive credit for your internship experiences. As you prepare for your internship, here are some important requirements for the course that you should consider.

 

GS 491 Course Requirements

  

Registration: Students will register for the course themselves.

Career-Readiness Competencies: You should select 3 to 4 core competencies that you would like to focus on during the internship. You will certainly be exposed to all of them, however you will want to focus on about 3 or 4 to include in your presentation.

Portfolio: There are several options for creating a portfolio, so review your options and select which option highlights your skills best. Your portfolio will will serve as documentation of your work and is something you can share with potential employers. Make sure to verify with your employer which elements are okay to share!

Presentation: At the end of the semester, you will present a 5-7 page paper that includes you reflections, insights and achievements from your internship. You may add additional research if you prefer, but it is not mandatory to do so. You will be asked to invite one professor or professional who has insight on your major or area of work.

Group  Meetings: There will be 2-3 group meetings for everyone who will be making presentations each semester. During these meetings, we will discuss your presentation content, format and creative ways to demonstrate what you experienced while working.
